Much like Sweden Scotland punches above its weight when it comes to precious indie bands. And that is where most of the songs on this playlist are drawn from, ingenious troupes that light up the underground. So in this instance our pick of Scottish Christmas songs has an altogether alternative edge, like the mostly instrumental ‘Christmas Eve’ from those Glaswegian jangle meisters Teenage Fanclub. The song may have been written by a Welsh band (Gorky’s Zygotic Mynci) but it took their Northern cousins to round off the edges. Frightened Rabbit have their own Christmas song called ‘It’s Christmas So We’ll Stop’ but for the purposes of this playlist here is their hilariously indie’d up version of Aled Jones’ ‘Walking In The Air’. Don’t let it scare you so if it does at least you have KT Tunstall’s ‘Christmas (Baby Please Come Home)’ to restore order. Another gem to warm the cockles of your seasonal heart is Glasvegas’ measured ‘A Snowflake Fell (And It Felt Like A Kiss)’ that belies their normal noisy selves. Only Christmas is capable of conjuring such transformations.
