The build up to the season every year is centred on the arrival of the 25th of December but for so many of us it is Christmas Eve that encapsulates the spirit of the holidays. With anticipation at fever pitch and the sense that everything thing is in its right place for events the following day Christmas Eve encapsulates the feeling of bonhomie without any of the stress. For Charles Dickens fans it is also the day when Ebenezer discovered what it means to open your heart over the 12 days and beyond. Give a little back and you will never finds yourself alone over Christmas.
Hardly surprising then that Christmas Eve has so many songs that bear its name. This playlist celebrates this very fact and we decided to set things in motion on the best possible footing with the Chieftains and their lively invocation of the precious sounds of December 24th. The Osmonds may lay it on with a little more syrupy but it is hard to be critical of ‘This Christmas Eve’ especially as you move around the house wearing a woollen jumper bearing the legend that is Rudolph!
Indie heroes Ben Folds Five present us with a different side of the holidays as its main character finds himself on his own as all around everyone enjoys themselves. It might be enough to put you on a little downer so that is while Smokey Robinson and the Miracles recorded ‘I Believe In Christmas Eve’ to ensure you never forget about the redemptive powers of this most special day.
