2013 was a pretty spectacular year for Christmas music as this playlist will hopefully illustrate. Heading the bill is Kelly Clarkson and her ‘All I Want For Christmas Is You’ like ‘Underneath The Tree’, which mirrors Mariah Carey’s classic in terms of its joyful spontaneity and its smile inducing charms. We’re pretty sure it is a Christmas song that will be with us for many years especially given those triumphant trumpets/bell parts that kick-in around the 2 and half minute mark. While ‘2013 Christmas Songs’ includes many of the heavy hitters from the big albums that year including Leona Lewis’ ‘One More Sleep’ and Mary J Blige’s ‘The First Noel’ there are also little wonders such as Lily Allen’s remake of ‘Something To Believe In’ which so propelled the unforgettable John Lewis festive advert.
Elsewhere you’ll find ex-Beatle Paul McCartney reprising his late 70’s self for a new rendition of ‘Wonderful Christmastime’. With Straight No Chaser providing all the non-instrumental background furnishings this was a cover that could have gone awry but instead it gave one of the most cherished Christmas songs of all time a contemporary sheen. Scotland’s Laurie Cameron may well be a relative unknown when stood beside some of the artists on this playlist but her ‘Merry Christmas From Scotland (Lulled With A Stiff Drink)’ has received much attention round the listening post at Yuleplay. Such low-key atmospherics are always welcome round our place and we think you’ll feel the same if you give it a chance amongst the usual Bing Crosby and Perry Como trappings.
