Back before the signature sounds of Christmas could be easily recreated in a studio it fell on the humble piano to emulate the noise made by church and jingle bells. Nowadays the synthetically generated possibilities are endless so Christmas songs employ the piano for its intended purpose. It's easy to see why piano Christmas songs are amongst the most popular each December given their lightness of touch. Joni Mitchell's 1971 song 'River' is a fine case in point. Stripped of the usual noise and decoration associated with Christmas songs it instead relies on Mitchell's clear vocals and a softly lilting piano line. It is a contemplative composition but then many piano Christmas songs are. Take a listen to Coldplay's 'Christmas Lights' which like most of the English band’s back catalogue has a memorable piano riff at its core.
Billy Joel is another obvious choice (he is the piano man after all!) and as you listen to his rendition of 'Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas' you can picture him in all of his Christmas finery just tinkling the ivories. Regina Spektor's music is usually all about her voice but on 'December' the New Yorker is almost upstaged by the delightful piano accompaniment – the sound of falling snow put to music. Ben Folds left his band behind for 'Christmas Eve', where he recounts his sorry tale of loneliness as all around him people are wildly celebrating the season. So while the majority of the songs on this piano Christmas playlist herald happy occasions it is good to remember that not everyone is in such jovial mood during the season.
