It was probably ‘Baby, It’s Cold Outside’ that set the ball rolling for convincing Christmas duets and who could argue with the chemistry between Dean Martin and Martina McBride. In the intervening period there has been umpteen Christmas duets, many coming from the country music genre. The most obvious pairing would have to be Dolly Parton and Kenny Rogers who appeared to spend most of the 1980’s tucked up beside a roaring fire singing Christmas tunes to each other That pairing always turned up the schmaltz so isn’t nice to have the barbs of realism stoked up by real life couple Johnny Cash and June Carter on ‘Christmas With You’. Elvis and Carrie Underwood also convinced when they were bound together through the wonders of technology (he had passed away decades before she joined him on their duet) to sniffle about each other’s absence on ‘Blue Christmas’. Which all goes to prove that Christmas is made all the more special when you have someone else to share it, preferably through song.
