As decades go the 1970's take some beating for providing us with Christmas classics. Take a listen to this compendium of 70s Christmas songs and you will doubtlessly recognise most of them as they have become integral to the annual festive soundtrack. In fact there would likely be a gaping hole in our celebrations had the decade that gave us glam and disco never happened. There are big seasonal hitters wherever you look from everyone's favourite party tinder 'Wonderful Christmastime' by Paul McCarthy to fellow ex-Beatle John Lennon and his anti-war polemic 'Happy Xmas (War Is Over)'.

What is most striking about the Christmas songs that emerged from the 70's is the variety that was produced. So for every anthem like Slade's 'Merry Xmas Everybody' there is a piece of quiet reflection to match it like the Carpenters’ beautiful 'Merry Christmas Darling'. You can also find plenty of sad and lonesome tales of likes of Mud's 'Lonely This Christmas' or instead just feast on the childlike joy and euphoria of the Wombles’ 'Wombling Merry Christmas'. And that is before you even reach for the bizarre novelties such as Elmo & Patsy's 'Grandma Got Run Over By A Reindeer'. What we'll all readily agree on however is how adept the 1970's were at throwing up classic Christmas songs. Could you even imagine the season without Johnny Mathis' 'When A Child Is Born' or Bing and Bowie singing together on their classic duet of 'The Little Drummer Boy/Peace On Earth'? Nope us neither, thank you to all you flare wearing geniuses - Christmas wouldn't be the same without you!
