The nineties had a big job on its hands to compare favourably in Christmas music terms with the decades that preceded it and while it produced a handful of classics it largely failed to upstage its predecessors. In saying that there were lots to be thankful for, primarily the emergence of Mariah Carey's colossal festive hit 'All I Want For Christmas Is You'. This gem would have graced any decade such is its effortless merry making charms and it has remained a staple of the Christmas soundtrack from its initial released in 1994. The luminous vibrancy of Carey's number left most other Christmas songs from the nineties in the shade but there were bright lights aplenty such as Canada's Sarah Mclachlan and her delicate and tender 'Song For A Winter's Night'. At the other end of the scale were the quirky yet heart-warming originals from indie bands the Flaming Lips and Eels with 'Christmas At The Zoo' and 'Everything's Gonna Be Cool This Christmas' taking the laurels for most underappreciated 90s Christmas music.

Boy Bands were really starting to take hold and rule the charts come the 1990's which means that our list of 90s Christmas songs contains plenty of them. NSync's 'Merry Christmas, Happy Holiday' was a case in point with rich harmonies pleasing their army of young fans back in the day which has probably carried through to modern times. Boyz II Men's rendition of 'Let It Snow! Let It Snow! Let It Snow!' was also warmly embraced as it took an old standard and gave it a touch of modernity. And if that sickly sweetness is enough to turn you off the season then a quick dose of the Vandals 'Oi To The World' should be enough to restore order. The nineties was at its best at providing oodles of MOR for the 12 days however as adeptly proven by Bon Jovi's clean cut 'Please Come Home For Christmas' and Garth Brookes faithful rendition of the old hymn 'Go Tell It On The Mountain'.
