If there is a genre of festive music that is particularly adept at offering folks the opportunity to let their hair down it is rock and roll Christmas songs. Rock and Roll has the energy and a sense of youthful vigour that so many other strands of music cannot compete with. And thankfully there is a rich tapestry of yuletide numbers from which to pick from. You'll find a premium collection on this playlist from old favourites like Roy Orbison's 'Pretty Paper' to little heard nuggets from the likes of the Penguins. The latter's contribution 'Jingle Jangle' is agile in its ability to explore new Christmas sounds and perhaps it is these daring directions that has kept it from the door of the greater population. Such a real shame but maybe you can be instrumental in spreading the good word from this Christmas forth!
Elsewhere there are unheralded gems a plenty, with rock n roll Christmas songs that deserve a place on playlists each year but have somehow slipped through the ice cracks. Take Chuck Blevins ‘Sleigh Bell Rock’ which sounds a good deal like Elvis singing ‘Rock Around The Clock’ and the Cadillacs with a classic interpretation ‘Rudolph The Red-Nosed Reindeer’. Sure it might lack the production sheen of contemporary recordings but that is half the joy as you listen to the music that was made with a different generation in mind. We’ll wrap up with a tune from 1955 from the Voices and the gurgling sound of a baby Santa Claus, just bath in that sax solo or the quirkily dispatched lyrics from leadman Bobby Day as you enjoy the best Christmas ever.
