Post Rock songs rarely if ever have vocals in their armoury, relying on the swell and contraction of the guitar lines to convey emotion. While this may sound restrictive on paper it can be absolutely overwhelming in practise, especially when some of the better exponents of the genre are involved. And our list of Post Rock Christmas songs manages to include several of the most celebrated bands from the loud/soft arena. Bands such as Texas 4-piece Explosions In The Sky who recorded ‘Christmas Dance’ for the ‘Friday Night Lights’ soundtrack. If you are familiar with this act you will recognise their signature sound which twinkles brightly like a Christmas Tree before combusting into an avalanche of sound when you least expect it. Mogwai are drawn from the same template but are perhaps a little bit less tender in their approach. ‘Christmas Steps’ is an instrumental of epic proportions and is drawn from the Glaswegian’s most celebrated album ‘Come On Die Young’. It is quite a joy to listen to this song unravel, quite less so when your Christmas plans do the same before your very eyes. Iceland’s Sigur Ros are the most successful band on this post rock Christmas songs list and while their ethereal music often sounds Christmas-like their only true contribution to the season is a live recording in their hometown of Reykjavík from 1999. Listen to your heart stop mid-way through.
