If there is a strand of music that is most likely to get the cigarette lighters raised in the air amongst a sea of swaying arms then it has to be soft rock. And this incredibly popular movement has also left an indelible impression on the Christmas soundtrack, so much so that this playlist of the best soft-rock Christmas songs ever is bulging with festive goodness for all the family. With a who's who of the music world making seasonal you'll have no choice but to join them with a warm drink near the open fire.

All the soft-rock greats are here such as those perennials the Eagles whose version of 'Please Come Home For Christmas' gave Charles Brown's 1960 blues number a decidedly country feel. Peter Cetera of Chicago appears twice, once with his band on their version of 'The Little Drummer Boy' and in a solo capacity where his operatic vocals light up the little known 'Something That Santa Claus Left Behind'. While a lot of the songs on this soft rock Christmas playlist are awash with bluster and drama there are also moments of quiet introspection. Chief among them are a pair of gentle songs from the seventies. Joni Mitchell's 'River' has steadily built its own legend which has resulted in countless remakes but her original remains the genuine article. Gordon Lightfoot's equally soft and folky 'Song For A Winter's Night' has also enjoyed a resurgence of late and can be successfully deployed throughout the winter and not just over the 12 days of Christmas celebration.
