While it’s easy to get lost in sea of nostalgia when it comes to Christmas music, and all those festive compilations don’t help as they rarely go beyond the late 1980’s, it must be remembered that modern Christmas songs are being produced in just as great numbers today as they were back in the golden age. Like our cherished classics the best modern Christmas songs set themselves apart from the crowd, displaying a spark that won’t extinguish with those annual end of year inspections.
By their own admission British guitar group Coldplay has yet to coin a classic Christmas song but that doesn’t stop their ‘Christmas Lights’ from sounding like one of the top modern Christmas songs. It has the build and emotional welly of Coldplay’s best material, and that’s before you mention that simple piano riff that will surely be replicated over and over by young pianists through the Christmas period. Mariah Carey is no stranger to producing Christmas standards (do we need to remind you of ‘All I Want For Christmas Is You’?) and while ‘Oh Santa’ may just fall short of her 1994 classic it still has buckets of joy to share. 'Oh Santa' is taken from the follow up to Carey's original Christmas 'Merry Christmas'.
Indie duet She & Him are an act made up of actress/singer Zooey Deschanel and musician M. Ward and while on (pretty) paper they sounds like an odd combo in practice their 2011 record ‘A Very She & Him Christmas’ was an acoustic delight. You can tell as much from the stripped back glory of their cover of ‘Silver Bells’. The age of the crooner may be long gone but Canadian singer Michael Buble is doing his best to bring back the good times. Fortunately he seems to be also quite the Christmas fan so his ‘Christmas’ album put every effort into adding a modern twist on a whole host of holiday classics. Opening track ‘It's Beginning to Look a Lot Like Christmas’ was a lesson in how to make modern Christmas music. Namely by turning down the lights, ushering in the orchestra and letting those golden vocals work their magic.
As we approach Christmas again the omens are looking great for prospective modern Christmas songs 2013 style as a host of top stars prepare their festive offerings. Leona Lewis, Kelly Clarkson, Mary J. Blige, Jewel and 80’s legends Kim Wilde and Erasure are just some of the many artists who will don the red apparel and make merry with a yuletide sound. By any standards this means that 2013 could potentially be a vintage year, following on the coattails of Christmas 2012 which saw winning contributions from the likes of Rod Stewart, Tracey Thorn and a classic in the making courtesy of the ‘Holidays Rule’ compilation. Such a risky venture in taking on a Karen Carpenter (the Carpenters) song but Christina Perri certainly did ‘Merry Christmas Darling’ justice. Taken from her 2012 ‘A Very Merry Perri Christmas’ Perri succeeded in not tinkering with a winning formula and managed to encapsulate the longing that so distinguished the original composition.
