For the most part these indie pop Christmas songs have been largely ignored by the greater population which is a shame because they have much to give. This oversight means that people are really denying themselves the genuine pleasure of hearing songs such the Bird & The Bee reinvention of ‘Carols of The Bells’. Inara George may have had technology help out but her vocals do something new and vibrant with this centuries old carol. The cool set will be enamoured that one of their heroes the XX have breathed an electro gothic sense of new life into the bubblegum that was the original. And if that is enough to make you go a shade of Elvis blue over the holidays you should instead turn fun.’s simple but artfully dramatic ‘Sleigh Ride’. It was featured on a very impressive Christmas collection for 2012 called ‘Holidays Rule’. From the same album is AgesandAges inspired take on ‘We Need A Little Christmas’ which first came to prominence when Angela ‘Murder She Wrote’ Lansbury recorded in first in the mid 1960’s.
There are plenty of originals on show on this indie pop Christmas song list with the pick being St. Etienne’s (they of the ‘I Was Born on Christmas Day’) ‘I Don't Intend To Spend Christmas Without You’ which is an exercise in yule cool. Another English band Brighter specialised on fey indie pop numbers and their ‘Christmas’ is a distillation of their soft jangling repertoire. The perfect break for anyone trying to escape the populist Christmas soundtrack.
