The biggest complaint that is levelled at Christmas and the music it produces is that the original Christian message has been lost. So on this short and snappy playlist we’ve put together 10 songs that embody the real meaning of Christmas but fashioned in a way that kids will find entertaining. Not surprising then that the Cast of Glee hold court with their ‘Do You Hear What I Hear?’, if any troupe are capable of jazzing things up it is them but they do so with the respect needed for the topic in hand. Michael Buble’s huge audience means that when he sings a large proportion of the population sits up and listens. So isn’t it a breath of fresh air when he turns in a lullaby like version of ‘Silent Night’ with a children’s choir to seal the deal? This is what parents up and down the land have been looking for for many years to get their little ones to sleep on Christmas Eve. And if that doesn’t do the trick then surely Mariah Carey’s drum filled ode to the beginning of Christianity ‘O Little Town of Bethlehem’ will be enough to tire them out before the big event on the morrow.
If there is one thing that will entertain little minds it is a Christmas song by one of their own. Which is exactly what Jackie Evancho was in 2011 when she released her first holiday album ‘Heavenly Christmas’. Aged just 11 she recorded a wonderfully dynamic classical version of the age old Christmas carol ‘Ding Dong Merrily on High’ which was further embellished by a full orchestra. Her vocals may have sounded much more mature than a singer of her age but there is an unrestrained sense of adventure in her performance that only someone unencumbered by too much advise from so-called experts could have produced.
