Christmas may not always require a classy soundtrack because the events that generally include Christmas music are often tinged with mayhem and high volume jollity. But if you are planning something a little more reserved for a group of people you would like to impress then these modern jazz Christmas songs should be all you'll ever need. Featuring Grammy winners such a Chris Botti and his freewheeling trumpet sound on ‘Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas’ this is a list of Christmas songs that are for the most part are instrumental in nature. Anita Baker (she of ‘Sweet Love’ fame) does ruffle a few feathers though with her sultry vocals on ‘I’ll Be Home For Christmas’ which ride so close to the music all around that they often segue in perfectly. Norah Jones also lends some singing to the generally sweet sounds on her little known but ever so beguiling ‘December’. Mindi Abair, signed to legendary Jazz label Verve Records, muscles in on what goes through our heads every month that is not December on ‘I Can’t Wait For Christmas’. Her smooth sax solos are the stuff of true lounge and mark her out of as one of modern jazz’s greatest exponents.
