While most people agree that techno and Christmas are not entirely easy bedfellows that hasn’t stopped an army of trance artists from offering their wares on the season. In most cases the techno Christmas songs that have emerged are reworking’s of favourite secular and religious standards. On the secular side there is hugely popular eurodance act Cascada who turned Wham’s ‘Last Christmas’ into a euphoric dancefloor cut. At the other end of the spectrum traditional carol ‘Joy To The World’ hardly knew what hit it when Dutch duo Dance Nation spirited it away on a trancetastic sleigh to be delivered to rave kids all over the world on Christmas eve. Slightly more reined in is Reina’s danced-up ‘Christmas (Baby, Please Come Home)’ which somehow holds on to the spirit of the original while ultimately emerging as a beat filled techno number.
While many of these techno Christmas songs leave you in no doubt as to which Christmas song they are covering there are some that have radically reinvented the source material. For example Epic Alliance turn Band Aid’s ‘Do They Know It’s Christmas’ into an Ibiza inspired epic that demands mass participation and if possible copious amounts of fake snow (only if foam can be dispensed with on this occasion). The unlikeliest track on the whole playlist comes from Jan Wayne who manages to turn ‘Danny Boy’ into a Christmas song with the little drummer boy adding the fulsome beats. ‘Christmastime’ is a fusion of techno and trance and should have anyone with a soft spot for raving, Christmas and Irish folk songs in complete raptures.
Now you can have PLURself a merry little Christmas!
