Stands to reason that any collection of funk Christmas songs would feature the king of the genre James Brown and his ‘Signs of Christmas’ does not disappoint. The groove is 100% authentic and Brown pulls the strings amid a fleet of brass parts and a coterie of female backing singers. Not that we’d recommend it but given the right levels of eggnog ingestion one could attempt some unchartered dance moves to somehow give the slinky music a live-action incarnation. Isn’t that what Christmas is all about after all? And while you’re at it maybe you could also take on Bootsy Collins funked-up version of ‘The Christmas Song’ that he retitled ‘Chestnutz’. Add a generous dash of hot sherry and you could easily approximate a dance interpretation of the slick vibe filtering from your speakers.
If foot movement and extreme body shaping are a definite no-no then there are plenty of smooth funk Christmas songs on this list to keep you entertained from the comfort of your couch. Latter day George Clinton got together with the Blind Boys of Alabama in 2003 to record a rendition of ‘Away In A Manager’ which is about a dozen galaxies away from the version you are likely to hear at church this Christmas. The Jive Turkeys might have only brought out ‘Get Down Santa’ in 2010 but it has all the hallmarks of a funk classic from yesteryear that could easily work its way into our most returned to classics each December such is its effortless funk.
