While we're all guilty of falling back onto the same batch of Christmas songs each December it is still nice to have an alternative close at hand for that moment when 'Last Christmas's beguiling charms start to wane. So our folked up alternative Christmas playlist showcases a bunch of contemporary artists tackling the songs we all know and love. As you listen to 'Walking In The Air' performed by an indie threesome from Scotland called Frightened Rabbit rather than a pubescent choir boy from Wales it somehow gets a new lease of life. Similarly John Lennon's sing along 'Happy Xmas (War Is Over)' is given a much more introspective rendition by Irish solo artist Damien Rice. Rice is known for his stripped down acoustic affairs but for all the hush there remains plenty of personality and this Christmas favourite loses none of its original message.
If you are after an original Christmas song you may not have heard of before then you will probably find lots to enjoy on this playlist. There is the 2008 single 'Christmas TV' from English band Slow Club, Martha Wainwright's quiet delight 'Merry Christmas and Happy New Year' and our favourite 'Maybe This Christmas' from folk pop supremo Ron Sexsmith. So endearing and true to the spirit of Christmas is 'Maybe This Christmas' that it actually inspired a series of Christmas compilations of the same name. The hope is that you'll grab at least one new song from this playlist for your annual end-of-year trawl through your favourite Christmas records.
