The Yule-tree, Tannenbaum or the plain old Christmas tree has been with us for centuries having originally started out as a tradition in Germany when the evergreen was decorated with fruit and candles. The decorations may have changed through the ages but the humble Christmas tree remains pivotal to the tradition of Christmas. And its central role in the Christmas festivities has meant that artists of every description have been performing Christmas tree songs since the advent of recorded music. Our playlist of Christmas Tree music contains many familiar artists such as Nat King Cole, Dean Martin, the Jackson 5 and of course Brenda Lee. And it is probably the latter’s 1958 ‘Rockin’ Around The Christmas Tree’ that is the most famous Christmas tree song of them all. Who could rightly not smile along with this classic as the 13 year old Lee belt’s out about the excitement of partying around the Christmas tree. A year later in 1959 and Nat King Cole was also celebrating the annual tradition of dressing the tree on his terrifically joyful ‘The Happiest Christmas Tree’ which is a perfect sing along anthem for small children. No Christmas tree playlist would seem complete without mention of cartoon character Charlie Brown seeing as it plays a significant role in 1965’s ‘A Charlie Brown Christmas’. While the soundtrack and general mood of this festive TV special was decidedly downbeat it was instrumental in fighting the cause against the commercialisation of Christmas. The soundtrack matched the low slung dynamics with the Vince Guaraldi Trio's ‘O Tannenbaum’ offering a piano led instrumental that is a constant each December in homes across the States.
